Star Wars - Who is the chosen one?

With the first teaser trailer for "Star Wars - The last Jedi" having been published only a few days ago all of us nerds are going into analyzing mode. Every nuance and imagine is being scrubbed to extract every bit of information.

If we include "Star Wars - Rouge One" this will be the ninth Star Wars movie and not only the latest installment coming out, but also the last one so far in the established chronology.

In The Phantom Menace (Episode I) we learnt about the prophecy of "The chosen one, who will bring balance to the force". Much of the first trilogy evolved around, whether Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one or not. While he certainly shifts the balance at the end of the trilogy, diminishing the power of the Light Side, we can hardly call this balance with the rise of the Dark Side in the form of the emperor and Darth Vader.

During the second trilogy although never explicitly mentioned we get the impression that Luke Skywalker, Anakin's son, might be the chosen one. Him finalizing his training and destroying the emperor with the help of his father, marks the return of the Jedi. But again we can't call this balance, as the Sith are extinct (At least to the knowledge of the viewer) and a living Jedi Knight remains.

This brings us to the final trilogy. In "The Force Awakens" we learn that the Sith have again risen in the form of Kylo Ren and that Luke Skywalker has gone into hiding. We have also seen that Rey is exceptionaly gifted, as she manages to defeat Kylo Ren without any formal training. We must therefore wonder: Is she finally the chosen one we have been waiting for?

In the trailer we hear Luke asking her what she sees, to what she replies: Light, Darkness in balance. She is obviously having a vision. In addition to this we hear Luke say later in the trailer: I only know one truth, it's time for the Jedi to end. Maybe this means that to bring balance to the force Jedi and Sith must end and that Luke has come to realise that. After all whenever there is a forcesensitive being that is inclined to one side, there can't be balance. Right?

What if bringing balance to the force means, that the Light and Dark side must be united again to complete each other, similar to the Ying Yang symbol?

Another interesting fact we can pick up during the trailer is that General Leia Organa is being shown as Rey says "Light". Does this mean we are finally going to learn more about Leia's force sensitvity? Unfortunately due to Carrie Fisher's passing, we will most likely not see her in episode IX, so it would be nice if "The last Jedi" gave this character a powerful send off.

Another interesting aspect is the struggle of Kylo Ren. In the Force Awakens we can see him struggle as both sides within him fight for supremacy. He wants to turn to the Dark Side but the Light Side continues to "call him". Could it be that he will bring balance to the Force but finding the balance between the Light and the Dark inside him?

Personally I think the prophecy has not been fullfilled yet, as the force is not in balance. If the chosen one ends up being Luke, Leia, Kylo Ren or Rey we will see.

I look forward to your feedback in the comment section.
