Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Movie review
The sequel to the Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (2014) is everything it promised and more.
While many sequels fall flat "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is in my opinion even better than the first. The main characters, especially Star Lord, Rocket Racoon and Gamora, are explored even more in depth and thus endeared even further to the audience. Even some supporting characters get their moment of soul searching and exploration. This sets this movie apart from most blockbusters which only focus on effects and action.
A particular scene stealer is Baby Groot, who received cheers in the cinema, whenever her was on screen. In the words of one of the characters: "...he is just to adorable..."
Chris Pratt's Starlord is this generation's Han Solo. Although Starlord is definetely also a loveable Scoundrel Pratt's protrayal is so good and different enough to make Starlord unique. The movie explores his background story in a fairly organic way and the story is well constructed with some interesting twists. Unlike many developments of this sort of movies it is in no way rushed and unfoldes nicely.
Bradley Cooper as Rocket Racoon demonstrates again his comedic abilities and he has some of the best lines of the movie.
Of course the movie is also full of hillarious one-liners that bring tears to the audience eyes and heroism from those you expect it the least.
Visually the movie is probably the best ever made. The de-aged Kurt Russel was the most realistic use of that technology ever. Having been a fan of Kurt Russel since the 80ies I found myself wondering if they had reused some old footage because of its realism. That scene alone screams special effects Oscar, not to mention the epic final battle.
James Gunn has managed to create a movie that transports you to many different worlds and makes you laugh, shiver and cry at the same time. Kurt Russel was perfectly cast and you could tell that he enjoyed himself working in this movie.
If there is one small issue it is that the final battle is perhaps a little bit too much in the sense that it keeps outdoing itself. On the other hand that is more a matter of personal taste.
(9/10 points)
