Wonder Woman - movie review

The first superhero movie with a female lead since "Elektra" (2005) the long awaited "Wonder Woman" has finally hit cinemas worldwide and has done so leaving a mark. Maybe it was because with Patty Jenkins it was helmed by woman or maybe simply because the time was right for another female superhero.

The story is nothing new sticking to the well known formula of explaining the superhero's orgin.

*MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD*

She finds her calling and sets out to do the right thing. She then is faced with a challenge she can't seem to master and it close to defeat. After loosing someone she cares about, she then realises her true potential and finally overcomes the villain.

What makes "Wonder Woman" remarkable within the sea of superhero movies is its characters. First there is the lead character played by Gal Gadot. While she is superior in many ways she has a childlike quality in many other aspects, which leads to some hillarious scences in particular with Chris Pine's character Steve Trevor. Gal Gadot is absolutely believable as an Amazon warrior. She has the psychique matching the fighting skills and certainly has the looks.

Chris Pine as Steve Trevor is her perfect counterpart. He masters to let Wonder Woman take the limelight without becoming a beta man. Of course this is also due to the writers/creators who give him sufficient qualities to make him a "worthy" partner and love interest for Wonder Woman despite her being physically superior. The scences where Diana, which is Wonder Woman's given name. is confronted with the modern world create some of the most hillarious scences of the movie.

The other funny part is Lucy Davis as Etta, Steve's secretary. She is a true scene stealer and proves again that she is an underrated actress. The rest of the cast is equally great and perfect for each roles, Robin Wright stands out in particular, as the Amazon warrior, who trains Diana.

While the movie has some great visual effects is doesn't rely on them as much as other superhero movies, which makes for a nice change. "Wonder Woman" draws more attention from the fighting scences, which of course include some effects.

With "Wonder Woman" DC comics has certainly made a big step to catch up with Marvel comics, which have sweeped the market in recent years. After the disappointing "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" DC has done it right and it has made the audience to look for to the upcoming movies.
